WHAT WE DO
In August 2022, full-time staff nurse and athlete Robin Downie became the first person to complete the Martin Moran Round, an endurance challenge set among the rugged peaks and wild glens of the North-West Highlands.
Robin was inspired by the local mountains of his youth and by Martin's own record-breaking Munros round in 1984. He dreamt up the challenge both to raise funds for the foundation and to push his own limits.
"These were Martin's local hills. He knew them better than anyone and shared them with many of us throughout his life. Hearing about his adventures and reading his books inspired me to challenge myself even further."
Robin Downie
Since Robin's first completion, the Round has grown into one of the most demanding mountain running challenges in the UK. It covers over 90km of wild, pathless terrain and more than 8,500m of ascent, weaving together the Munros and Corbetts of Torridon and Achnashellach. In 2024, additions by runner Ian Stewart brought the standard route to 9 Munros and 8 Corbetts. The change was approved by Robin, the architect of the Round, and is now needed to log an FKT.
The Round is a fitting tribute to Martin. It reflects his love of the wild hills around his home, and his drive to test the limits of endurance and mountain skill.

Ethics & guidelines
The Martin Moran Round is more than a test of endurance. It is a commitment to safety, respect for the landscape and the spirit in which the challenge was created. Every attempt should reflect Martin and Robin's values: self-reliance, responsibility, preparation and deep care for the hills. By registering, you agree to follow these principles, so the Round stays meaningful, fair and sustainable for everyone who takes it on.

Leave no trace
This is an area of great natural beauty and must be treated with the utmost care. Leave no trace of your passage and be mindful of wildlife. These wild places are fragile, and part of the challenge is to pass through them lightly, so others can enjoy the same experience for years to come.
Our role
We provide information, encouragement and a record of every registered completion. This is not a commercial event but a community challenge. We love hearing about your experiences and sharing photos on our platform, and where possible we encourage fundraising to support our work. THE FILM
Robin's round, on film
In 2022, Robin Downie became the first person to complete the Martin Moran Round. Filmmakers JHP Visuals followed his journey through the wild peaks and glens of the North-West Highlands, capturing both the challenge itself and the story of the man it honours. Watch the film to meet Robin, learn about Martin and see the mountains where it all unfolds.
IN THEIR WORDS
With special thanks to Torridon Mountain Rescue
A special mention goes to Torridon Mountain Rescue, of which Martin was a proud member for many years. This exceptional volunteer team provides vital emergency support in some of the wildest and most remote terrain in the UK, and their presence reassures everyone who explores these mountains. Several members have completed the Round themselves and know these hills and glens better than anyone, which reflects its close link with the local mountain community.
